He had been located and arrested at the Maresca Hospital in Torre del Greco, where he had gone with his lawyer for facial fractures sustained in last night's accident. Aniello Scarpati's colleagues had identified him during the night, but he had not been located at his home in Ercolano. The search continued throughout the morning until the man was found and arrested after a drug test. His whereabouts are being assessed by investigators.

The police union is calling for exemplary punishment: "The driver of the BMW who, at breakneck speed last night, struck the Torre del Greco police station patrol car, killing Assistant Chief Aniello Scarpati and injuring another officer, has been arrested at the Torre del Greco hospital. The 28-year-old, who had been wanted for hours, went to the hospital with his lawyer for treatment and was immediately detained by police station staff. His case is now being examined by the Prosecutor's Office, under suspicion of vehicular homicide and failure to render aid," stated Domenico Pianese, general secretary of the COISP Police Union, in a statement.

"We demand exemplary punishment for those who, through irresponsible and criminal conduct, cause the death of a police officer and then attempt to evade responsibility. There can be no mitigating circumstances for those who flee, leaving a lifeless man on the pavement," he continues. "We owe this not only to the memory of our colleague Scarpati, but also to the respect of all the women and men who risk their lives every day to ensure the safety of citizens," Pianese concludes.

What happened is a very serious matter, and the driver's responsibility must be clearly established. People cannot be allowed to flee after such tragic accidents; more enforcement and harsher penalties are needed.
