Naples – A "serious" release, one of those that puts the District Anti-Mafia Directorate's attention back on the city's eastern outskirts. Giuseppe Casella, 47, the Ponticelli boss believed by investigators to be a key figure in the eponymous crime family, a staunch ally of the De Luca Bossa-Minichini clan, has left the maximum security prison in Cagliari.
What opened up for him was not the doors of freedom, but those of his home. The Naples Court of Appeal ordered the replacement of his prison sentence with house arrest.
The decision was based purely on health concerns. The 47-year-old "zone boss" of Via Franciosa, defended by criminal lawyers Leopoldo Perone and Domenico Dello Iacono, has long suffered from a severe form of ischemic heart disease, a condition that has already required him to undergo major surgery.
The two defense attorneys produced extensive documentation, supported by medical reports, attesting to the incompatibility of his health with prison regimen. This request was ultimately upheld by the Court of Appeal, where Casella is still being charged with mafia association.
Casella 's return to his home turf, albeit confined to his home, is no small feat. Investigators consider him one of the key figures in the criminal holding company that manages illicit business between Lotto 0 and the Barra neighborhood. His criminal record already includes a 14-year first-instance sentence for mafia association and another, to 3 years and 6 months, for extorting an illegal parking attendant, Michele Frattini, who was threatened and beaten by the clan.
The fear now is that his return could upset the delicate and unstable criminal balance in Ponticelli. The massive raid of November 2022, which led to over 60 arrests, dealt a severe blow to the organization. That investigation, sparked by a seizure of narcotics and manuscripts in 2016 and accelerated by intimidation over control of public housing in 2020, had decapitated the clan's leadership.
Bosses and their followers ended up in handcuffs, including historical figures such as the "pasionaria" Anna De Luca Bossa and the new generation represented by the children of the clan leaders, including Giuseppe, Anna, Emmanuel and Umberto De Luca Bossa, and the scions of the Minichini family, Alfredo, Martina and Michele "Tiger".
Casella 's arrest was a key piece of that operation. His return, though dictated by health reasons and subject to restrictions, repositions a strategic pawn on the East Naples scene. Investigators will monitor closely for any signs of unrest, fearing that his presence could act as a catalyst for reorganization within the clan or spark new tensions with rival groups for control of the territory.
The news of Casella's return home is a bit concerning, given his serious criminal past. Let's hope it doesn't negatively impact the already fragile balance of power in the area. Health is important, but safety is even more so.
