They used the cruelest levers: fear for a child in danger or the fear of legal trouble. A trio of alleged fraudsters, specializing in targeting the most vulnerable segments of the population, were arrested on Saturday in Imola by officers from the Police Station. A man originally from Puglia (Manfredonia) but resident in Ferrara and two women from Naples were arrested on the serious charge of attempted fraud with multiple aggravating circumstances.
The investigation: tailed from Naples
The operation was triggered by a thorough investigation. Investigators at the Imola police station had acquired crucial information: a rental car, already known to law enforcement because it was used by individuals involved in this type of crime, had left Naples and was headed straight for Emilia.
The "battery" (as criminal groups specializing in predatory crimes are known in slang) was unaware they were being monitored. The officers followed the car to Via Villa Clelia in Imola. There, the three got out, suspiciously entered an apartment building, and hastily exited a few moments later.
At that point, fearing that a robbery had just been carried out, the police intervened, stopping them and taking them to the office for investigation.
The techniques: from the fake financier to the fake accident
Investigators' reconstruction of the case allowed them to foil three separate scam attempts, all of which failed thanks to the victims' prompt action or the intervention of the police.

The first target was an 82-year-old man, who lived in the very building on Via Villa Clelia where the three had been seen entering. Two further attempts were recorded against a retired couple on Via del Condotto and another elderly woman living in the Sesto Imolese area.
The methods used were subtle and proven:
The fake financier: The scammers told one of the victims that a jewelry store had been robbed and that the getaway car was registered in her name. Under the pretext of needing to "verify" the assets, they asked the elderly man to show all the valuables and gold stored in the house.
The fake accident: The cruelest deception. In another case, they contacted the victim by phone, announcing that her daughter had just run over a little girl, who was now dying. To "resolve" the situation, avoiding jail time for the daughter and paying for emergency surgery, money and jewelry were needed immediately.
Fortunately, none of the elders fell into the trap.
After completing the formal procedures, the judicial authorities placed the man under house arrest (which he will serve in Ravenna), while the two accomplices were banned from returning to the metropolitan city of Bologna.
