ROME – Eight candidates in the regional elections on November 23 and 24 have been deemed "unfit" by the Anti-Mafia Commission: four in Puglia, supporting the center-right presidential candidate Lobuono, and four in Campania, representing both the center-right and center-left lists. No irregularities were identified in Veneto. The decision follows a review of the candidates' ethical credentials and aims to ensure transparency and legality ahead of the vote.

In Puglia, the contested candidates include candidates already indicted for serious crimes such as corruption, interference with the freedom of auctions, and money laundering. Some cases also involve convictions passed on appeal for unauthorized access to computer systems. In Campania, the unsuitable candidates include individuals involved in proceedings for fraudulent bankruptcy, money laundering, illegal labor brokerage, and attempted extortion. The Anti-Mafia Authority has also identified candidates for municipal elections in municipalities dissolved due to mafia infiltration, highlighting how several former administrators and councilors have returned to the race despite pending proceedings.

The publication of the list is bound to spark a heated political debate just days before the election, raising questions about the ability of political parties to ensure candidates comply with their ethical codes. This phenomenon, as the commission emphasizes, involves not only violations of the law, but also conduct that can undermine citizens' trust in institutions. The case once again brings the issue of legality and transparency to the forefront of the election campaign, while the reported candidates will still be able to vote, with potential legal or political repercussions related to the ongoing legal proceedings.

Reading the article, it seems to me that unpresentable candidates are a serious problem. But how can we ensure that the lists are truly clean? People need to be able to trust politicians and their choices, without a doubt.
