A dramatic accident occurred Monday evening in Salerno along Via Benedetto Croce, the main road connecting the city to Vietri sul Mare. A car suddenly crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the ravine below, coming to rest after a flight of at least ten meters in a rugged area not far from the Via Ligea sports field.
According to initial reports, there was only one person on board. The driver remained conscious throughout the rescue operations, despite the violent impact and the difficult position in which the car came to rest.
The alarm was raised around 21:30 PM, when several motorists and passersby witnessed the scene and immediately called for help. Within minutes, the city firefighters arrived on the scene, supported by the speleo-alpine-fluvial unit, a ladder truck, and ambulances.118 and the Red Cross, in addition to law enforcement agencies, including the Carabinieri, for traffic management and security.
The road was temporarily closed to traffic to allow for the delicate rescue operations. The firefighters, impeded by thick vegetation and numerous branches, had to clear a path by cutting through trees and shrubs to reach the point where the car had become stuck in the rock face overlooking the port area.
Constant communication between the ground team and the firefighters who ascended the vehicle with the ladder truck was crucial. Once they reached the vehicle, the rescuers checked the driver's condition, who was conscious, and placed him on a stretcher for safe recovery.

"The car has been reached by rescuers and it appears that only one person is conscious on board," the firefighters themselves had communicated during the operations, while maneuvers were being carried out to recover the injured man, whose identity has not yet been released.
The operation concluded shortly before midnight, after approximately two hours of work in difficult conditions. The man was finally rescued and handed over to the care of medical personnel. Despite his fall, he breathed a true sigh of relief: he remained alert from the moment of the accident until he was transferred to the ambulance.
Meanwhile, a silent crowd had gathered around the area: residents, onlookers, and motorists stranded at either end of the street, on Via Benedetto Croce and Via Ligea, watched the operations with bated breath, peering into the darkness at the rescuers' movements and hoping for a positive outcome. Many captured the completely shattered railing on their phones, a sign of the force of the impact.
Several details about the accident remain unclear. According to an initial hypothesis, the driver, as seen in video surveillance footage in the area, appears to have lost control of the vehicle, or there was a sudden brake issue. However, ongoing law enforcement investigations will determine the precise causes and responsibilities for what happened on one of the city's busiest and most sensitive scenic roads.
