Naples - It's almost 9:00 PM when, on a street in Scampia, a man's screams and a child's desperate cries shatter the evening silence. A furious argument filters out from a ground-floor apartment. Neighbors call 911, and within minutes, a Carabinieri patrol from the local station reaches the building.
The officers decide to intervene immediately. They enter the home and find a scene of extreme tension: in the small house are a 54-year-old man, a 50-year-old woman, and their 11-year-old son. The child is in tears, the mother is visibly frightened, and the man is out of control.
Upon seeing the Carabinieri, the 54-year-old continues to yell at his partner, oblivious to their presence. His words escalate into insults and threats:
“You're a piece of garbage, you called the police… I'll make you pay… I have to burn down your house… You're a dirty woman, you're a scoundrel.”
The woman remains silent, clutching her son, while the man threatens to kill her, even in front of the police.
For the CarabinieriHe's not a new face. The man had already been arrested in March 2024 after his partner filed a complaint for mistreatment and serious threats. Despite that incident and the measures he received, the family situation not only failed to improve, but—according to reports—it had become even more dangerous, partly due to the 54-year-old's alcohol and drug abuse.
"I forgave him for my son," the woman whispered to the officers, as the child continued to cry. A gesture of hope and fear: the hope that the father could change for the child's sake, the fear of being left alone and unable to protect her son from a relentless cycle of violence.
Faced with the scene and the threats made in their presence, the Carabinieri detained the man and placed him under arrest. The 54-year-old will face charges of domestic abuse and aggravated threats. A protective order is now underway for the mother and son, with the intervention of the judicial authorities and the relevant services, in a case that has once again shone a spotlight on the often silent tragedy of gender-based and domestic violence.
