A complex criminal network specializing in insurance fraud has been dismantled by the Carabinieri of Cantalice, in the province of Rieti. Seventeen individuals will be charged with crimes ranging from fraud to false ideology, including fraudulent personal injury. The toll is significant: 26 traffic accidents that either never occurred or were deliberately exaggerated, with estimated financial damages of approximately €200 to the insurance companies.
A proven system with precise roles
The fraudulent mechanism was perfectly well-oiled. Each member of the group had a specific role in the scam: the owner of the accident insurance agency handled the bureaucratic side of things, compliant doctors certified nonexistent injuries, and body shop workers declared repairs never performed. False documentation was created to support the compensation claims: fabricated medical reports, inflated invoices, and forged certifications.
The suspects, residing in the provinces of Rieti, Rome, and Salerno, operated across a vast territory thanks to a well-structured network of professionals and intermediaries. The gang simulated completely fabricated accidents or amplified actual incidents to obtain undue compensation from insurance companies.
The investigation started from six suspected cases
The investigation, coordinated by the Rieti Public Prosecutor's Office, began in 2021 after six accidents in the province of Rieti appeared suspicious to investigators. A thorough analysis revealed that some were completely fabricated. The investigators cross-referenced insurance data, collected witness statements, and applied traditional investigative methods to reconstruct the entire fraud chain.
The Carabinieri's meticulous work allowed them to map all 26 fake incidents orchestrated by the group, leading to the 17 perpetrators being charged at liberty. The charges include fraud, fraudulent damage to insured property, fraudulent mutilation of one's person, ideological forgery committed by a public official in public documents, and impersonation.
