Striano: Clandestine lab dismantled; one ton of meat and offal seized

Striano– An anonymous garage transformed into a veritable hub for illegal food trafficking: this is what was discovered and dismantled in recent days by the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Naples, in collaboration with staff from the ASL Napoli 3 SUD.

The operation, conducted as part of the economic control of the territory and the fight against illicit trafficking, led to the seizure of approximately one ton of offal and animal skins and the prosecution of the person responsible.

The operation, carried out by the Torre Annunziata Group's financial police, uncovered a clandestine laboratory for the processing of the so-called "fifth quarter," or the offal and less noble parts of pigs and cattle.

The property, illegally used as a factory, was completely unknown to the tax authorities and operated without any health or administrative authorization required by law.

The storage conditions for the meat and by-products were, according to investigators, "terrible." Among the processing equipment seized were underground tanks, refrigerated containers, bins, and soaking and cooking tanks: a homemade, yet potentially lethal, facility intended to illegally supply the market for the typical Neapolitan dish "o' pere e o' musso."

Investigators believe the lack of any product traceability documentation makes it impossible to trace the origin of the meat, posing a serious and concrete risk to the health of end consumers.

Report and Seizure

The owner of the illegal business has been reported to the Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office. The charges against him primarily concern violations of environmental regulations—due to the illegal management of animal waste—and health-related violations, which have also resulted in administrative sanctions.

The issue of meat traceability is fundamental, yet illegal activities like this one still exist that put consumers at risk. Greater attention is needed from citizens and institutions.

It's truly alarming to know that there are places where meat is processed in these conditions. I hope that those responsible will take action to protect public health and punish those responsible.

I don't understand how it's possible that a garage could become a laboratory for so long without anyone noticing. The authorities should carry out more frequent checks to avoid these situations.
