Following the resounding success of previous openings, special tours of the Suburban Baths of Herculaneum, one of the best-preserved Roman bath complexes in the world, are back. For three consecutive Saturdays—November 15, 22, and 29, 2025—the public will be able to access an area normally closed to the public, enjoying an exclusive experience amidst ancient architecture and ongoing restorations.

An experience not to be missed

Visits will take place in two daily shifts:

1st shift: 10.30–11.30 am (maximum 10 participants)

2st shift: 11.30–12.30 am (maximum 10 participants)

Every session at previous openings sold out within a few days, confirming the public's enthusiasm for this initiative. The Suburban Baths, located between the city walls and the ancient beach, were originally built as a private bathhouse for the Nonii Balbi family, one of the most influential families in Herculaneum, and later opened to the public.

A spa complex without equal

The site still preserves valuable marble floors, stucco decorations and high-quality paintings, the rare original wooden doors, and an innovative "samovar" heating system for the hot pools, unique in its state of preservation. These elements testify to the refinement and prestige of Herculaneum society, as well as the attention the Romans devoted to well-being, personal care, and social life.

Restoration and enhancement

The special opening is made possible thanks to a major restoration and enhancement project, entirely funded by state funds and carried out in collaboration with the Packard Humanities Institute, which has supported the Herculaneum Archaeological Park for nearly twenty-five years in protecting and promoting the site. Visitors will be able to discover the extraordinary architecture and decorations of the bath complex while also observing the ongoing restoration work.

The Suburban Baths of Herculaneum are an interesting place, so I wanted to know if there are other dates for visits or just those three Saturdays. Tickets sell out quickly, so booking is difficult.
