A clear timeline for cleaning up the streets of the Land of Fires and a call for unity against criminals. Sole Commissioner General Giuseppe Vadalà reviews the cleanup operations and announces the goal: "We want a large portion of the waste to be removed from the streets by next spring (2026, ed.), hoping that the summer season will see fewer toxic fires than the previous one."
The government's acceleration in February, as Vadalà emphasizes, is producing concrete results. "We're doing what we set out to do," the Commissioner told Adnkronos, fresh from inspections of the remediated illegal landfills in Giugliano (Naples) and Villa Literno (Caserta). "Since September 15th, we've disposed of 300 tons, and in the coming weeks, we'll dispose of another 400 tons."
The Plan: 25 million and three strategic lots
The commitment, Vadalà warns, "must continue for months and years," but the operational groundwork has been laid. The heart of the plan is a €25 million mega-tender, already published on the ANAC (National Anti-Corruption Authority) website, for surface waste disposal.
The call is strategically divided:
A lot destined for the province of Naples.
A lot for the province of Caserta.
A third lot dedicated to a "major waste dump".

At the same time, "everything that was planned based on the report presented to the government in March" is being implemented, ensuring compliance with the roadmap.
Zero Tolerance: cameras and special law
Removing the piles, however, is only one side of the coin. The other, crucial aspect is prevention, to stop future spills. "We're installing cameras," Vadalà confirms, referring to the tools provided for by the Terra dei Fuochi Decree passed on October 3rd.
The combined action of deterrence and sanctions aims to "block the hand of these criminals, who are such because they harm everyone's health."
Politics and Synergy: "Everyone on the Right Side"
Inevitably, the Land of Fires has become a central theme of the election campaign, seized upon by both the center-right (Edmondo Cirielli) and the center-left (Roberto Fico). Vadalà doesn't shy away from the question: "It's appropriate that it's a campaign theme," he comments. "We must all be on the right side against those few criminals."
The Commissioner emphasizes the impartial role of his organization and of the Carabinieri, "at the service of the government" but also "of municipal and regional institutions."
As a virtuous example of this synergy, Vadalà cites the Villa Literno model. After the waste removal operation by the commissioner, the Municipality "installed video cameras at its own expense," the Anas "fenced off the area," and the Consorzio Bonifica Volturno is working "to remove the waste from the canals, taking it to the road, which we then dispose of." This teamwork is essential to winning the battle against fires.

It's an interesting article, but many things aren't clear. How will we verify that waste is actually disposed of? I hope the cameras work well and aren't just another expense.
