Torre del Greco - A night of tragedy unfolded on the roads of the Naples area, where a violent collision between a State Police patrol car and a rental BMW SUV caused the death of Assistant Chief Coordinator Aniello Scarpati, 47, and the serious injuries of his colleague Ciro Cozzolino, who is hospitalized with a guarded prognosis at the Ospedale del Mare in Naples.
The fatal impact: The accident occurred overnight on Viale Europa in Torre del Greco, when, according to initial reports, the SUV crossed into the oncoming lane, crashing into the patrol car and throwing it into a ditch. Scarpati died instantly, while Cozzolino remained trapped inside.
The getaway driverThe SUV was driven by the 28-year-old rental contract holder, originally from Torre del Greco and resident in Ercolano.

Identified passengersFive other people were traveling with the driver, who were located in the following hours. Four of them, including three minors, presented to the emergency room at Maresca Hospital with minor injuries. A fifth passenger, an adult with a criminal record, presented himself voluntarily that morning at the Torre del Greco police station.
The Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office immediately opened an investigation to fully understand the circumstances of the accident and the responsibilities of the fleeing driver. The 28-year-old's actions, in which he abandoned the injured officers, were described by investigative sources as "a cowardly escape."
Aniello Scarpati, assistant chief coordinator and father of three, had reportedly taken the shift to replace a colleague. His passing has sparked deep mourning throughout the community and at the Naples Police Headquarters.
