Torre del Greco - It had started like any other night out with friends, filled with drinks, bars, and music. But it ended with sirens and despair. Tommaso Severino, twenty-eight, a well-known face in the Vesuvius area for his family's small second-hand car business, had decided to indulge in some entertainment that night.

First a beer, then a few too many cocktails, finally cocaine to keep himself going. Then the race down Viale Europa, behind the wheel of a company BMW X4, which in a matter of seconds became a deadly weapon.

The impact with the police car, traveling in the opposite direction, was devastating: patrol leader Aniello Scarpati, a father of three, died instantly; his colleague Ciro Cozzolino was seriously injured. A tragedy that, as investigators will soon state, "perhaps could not have happened."

The pirate's profile

Until the day before, Severino had only an old complaint for a fight to deal with. Then came work, family, and the desire to build a different future. He'd recently started running the accessories business with his father. There were no signs of disaster.

But the medical tests he underwent in the Maresca emergency room speak clearly: positive for cocaine and a blood alcohol level of 1,1 milligrams per liter, more than double the legal limit.

Slumped on a stretcher, distraught and in tears, he repeatedly asked the victim's colleagues how he could cope with what had happened. "I wish I were in her place," he muttered between sobs. Words that, more than any defense, conveyed the full extent of the tragedy.

The investigation and arrest

The case is now in the hands of Public Prosecutor Alessandro Riccio of the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office. The charges are extremely serious: vehicular homicide, grievous bodily harm, and failure to render aid, aggravated by drug use. After hours of being untraceable, Severino was located and transferred to Poggioreale. He will be heard in court between Monday and Tuesday, assisted by lawyers Domenico Dello Iacono and Valentina Alfieri.

His account to the police is still confusing: an evening that began with a friend, continued with other acquaintances, and culminated in an encounter with three minors returning from a party. Then came the descent, the speed, the darkness, and the crash.

The drama in the hospital corridors

When Scarpati's colleagues reveal that the victim was the father of three children, Tommaso explodes. He breaks down, covers his face in his hands, and keeps repeating that he won't be able to live with that burden. It's a long, desperate cry, like that of someone who only then realizes the irreparable.

Behind the tears, the facts remain: cocaine, alcohol, speed. And a family man who will never return home.

The saddest thing is that certain things should never happen, but unfortunately they do and leave an indelible mark on the lives of those left behind. We need more responsibility from everyone.

I can't believe an evening like any other could end this way. There are no words to describe the sadness I feel. Let's hope justice takes its course.

It's a very sad story and makes you think about how bad decisions can change the lives of so many people. I hope there are lessons to be learned to avoid similar tragedies in the future. Life is precious.
