In Maiori, an elderly woman fell for a scam call. After months of investigation, the Carabinieri arrested two men, now under house arrest, accused of stealing her entire savings.
A cruel scam that preys on loved ones to steal a person's life savings. It happened in Maiori, in the heart of the Amalfi Coast, where an elderly woman fell victim to the infamous "fake grandson scam," leaving her with €30.000 in cash.
The story, which dates back to last July, followed a sadly familiar pattern. It all began with a phone call to the home landline: on the other end, an excited voice pretending to be the beloved nephew. The scammer claimed he was in dire straits and urgently needed money to pay a fine, specifying that a representative would shortly pick up the money right outside the house.
The elderly woman, frightened and misled by the fake emergency situation, didn't think twice. She gathered all the savings she had jealously guarded at home and went out into the street, where she handed the money to a stranger, convinced she was helping her grandson.
Once the deception was discovered, a complaint was filed, which triggered a meticulous investigation by the Carabinieri of the Maiori Station and the Operational Unit of the Amalfi Company.
The military, coordinated by the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office, reconstructed the criminals' movements and successfully identified the alleged perpetrators. Based on the accusation, the Preliminary Investigations Judge (GIP) of the Salerno Court issued a house arrest order against the DC and PDV members, under investigation for aggravated fraud.

Scams like this are on the rise, and more must be done to stop them. This isn't just a Maiori problem, but affects all communities. More education on this issue is needed to prevent future victims.
I can't believe there are such unscrupulous people! It's truly appalling to see how people exploit the vulnerability of others for their own gain. I hope these two are severely punished.
This story is very sad and makes us reflect on how easy it is to be deceived. Elderly people, who have lived so much, deserve to be protected and not exploited. Let's hope justice is done.
