Naples – A heavy shadow hangs over the vote in Acerra. A shadow cast by pressure, veiled threats, and a "constant graft" that stifles free democratic expression. The alarm, in black and white, was raised on October 31st by Alessandro Cannavacciuolo, an independent candidate on the Alliance of the Greens and the Left (AVS) list and a prominent figure in the battle against the poisons of the Land of Fires. Now, the Prefecture of Naples has broken the deadlock and begun a formal investigation.
The picture painted by Cannavacciuolo is alarming. The activist, whose reports have contributed to Italy's condemnation of environmental disasters, has asked the Prefecture for "immediate and extraordinary intervention" to ensure legality.
Cannavacciuolo knows he's a tough candidate. His decades-long fight against pollution has affected powerful interests, bringing prominent local businessmen to justice. And now, he says, the bill is being presented to him during the election campaign.
(h39The Pressure "System"
The activist doesn't name names, but he describes a widespread system of coercion. "There are people," Cannavacciuolo thunders, "who would like to vote for me but are forced to hide my campaign poster because someone has demanded their vote."
The complaint lists precise methods and objectives:
Direct Threats: Retaliation promised to "ordinary citizens and small business owners" if they do not support the "proposed candidate."
Municipal employees under pressure: There is talk of "coercion and intimidation," even "indirect," to force employees to participate in or support specific electoral campaigns, under penalty of "retaliation or discrimination in the workplace."
The bargaining of professionals and technicians: Local figures would be "induced to publicly demonstrate their support" in exchange for "alleged favors or benefits" in municipal offices.
Pressure on the school: The complaint also cites interference with teachers at the High School on Via Diaz.
The Prefecture's investigation
As the election campaign heats up, the Prefecture's investigation will now have to ascertain the veracity of these accusations, which cast a disturbing shadow over the transparency of the vote in an already deeply wounded area. Cannavacciuolo has only one goal: a "peaceful and transparent" election campaign. A right that, in Acerra, seems far from guaranteed.

The article addresses a very serious and important issue for democracy. Pressure and threats during elections are a problem that must be addressed. I hope the Prefecture will clarify this complicated and absurd situation.
