Reggio Calabria – TikTok videos betrayed them. A pair of burglars specializing in residential burglaries were arrested by the State Police thanks to videos posted on social media showing them prowling undisturbed through the stairwells of an apartment building. Users had already identified them and reported them as "burglars" in the comments.
The man and woman, living in the Naples-Scampia Roma camp, were arrested on charges of aggravated residential burglary. The arrest warrant, issued by the preliminary investigations judge of the Court of Palmi, was executed by the Taurianova police station in collaboration with the mobile squads of Reggio Calabria and Naples and the Scampia police station.
The robbery in the villa and the escape with the jewels
The investigation began in August 2024 following a complaint from a Taurianova resident for the theft of gold jewelry from his parents' home. The thieves had broken down an iron gate, forced open a French window, and ransacked the home before fleeing in a car.

Analysis of video surveillance footage allowed investigators to reconstruct the robbery and identify the two perpetrators. The same vehicle had been used a few days earlier in a similar robbery in the Vibo Valentia area.
Social networks and databases: the double recognition
The turning point came from videos posted on TikTok. The images showed the couple moving freely through an apartment building, with users reporting them in the comments as known thieves. Investigators compared the faces extracted from surveillance cameras with those in law enforcement databases, successfully identifying the perpetrators.
Both have prior convictions for property crimes. The man was booked into the Naples Poggioreale prison, where he was already being held for other crimes. The woman, after completing the formal procedures, was taken to prison.

It's amazing how TikTok videos can help police catch thieves. But I wonder why they don't use this technology more often to prevent crimes instead of solving them after they happen. I hope more cases are solved this way.
