Caivano – "Where babà is a serious matter." The sign of a well-known local café and pastry shop turned out to be a bitter irony. Carabinieri officers from the Caivano station, with the support of doctors from the Naples 2 North Local Health Authority and Enel technicians, dismantled a clandestine operation riddled with irregularities.
The first blow came from an illegal connection to the electricity grid: a fraudulent system that pumped €100 worth of energy into the entire laboratory, commercial premises, and refrigeration systems. A colossal theft, discovered thanks to the valuable assistance of Enel staff.
But the real shock occurred in the pastry shop, illegally set up in the rooms adjacent to the bar. Here, the Carabinieri, acting on orders from local health authorities, seized 300 kilos of food in a terrible state of preservation: babà containers encrusted with dirt, sweet ingredients, and cherries piled up in unhygienic corners.

Dilapidated premises, rusty machinery, zero permits: only a lease to cover up the illegality.
The owner, a 41-year-old local, was arrested on charges of aggravated electricity theft and unauthorized operation. The business was immediately suspended, and the shop sealed. Another dark page for the "hard-to-eat" Caivano residents, where the dessert concealed poisons.
