The Naples Supervisory Magistrate has granted provisional probation to Mario Vrilli, 21, who is under house arrest and sentenced to 4 years and 6 months for a robbery committed in Casalnuovo in July 2022.

Vrilli's accomplice, Biagio Auletta, was also convicted. That evening, the two committed a double scooter robbery involving two young men. However, while fleeing on separate streets, Mario Vrilli was chased by the occupants of a T Roc and seriously injured by gunshots.

He was hospitalized in serious condition for several weeks. While traveling at high speed wearing a full-face helmet, he was mistaken for a member of a rival clan and shot by several Camorristi from Casalnuovo. The DDA's investigation into the incident is ongoing to identify the perpetrators.

The decision to place him on probation comes just a few weeks after his detention began on October 23 and must now be confirmed by the Surveillance Court.

The crime and the sentence

Vrilli was found guilty of aggravated robbery by the Nola investigating judge on February 13, 2025. The sentence was confirmed by the Naples Court of Appeal on July 4 and became final on October 2. The sentence is scheduled to end on June 12, 2029.

Within a few weeks, the decision was made by Surveillance Judge Maria Picardi. In her ruling, the magistrate analyzed a series of factors deemed favorable: "His young age and a positive history," but also his regular conduct both in prison and during his previous house arrest, his lack of connections to organized crime, and finally, his lack of any other pending charges or convictions.

But the two key points that led to the decision were the suitability of the family home in Volla and the father's willingness to take him in, and the concrete job offer, considered a fundamental step in the reintegration process.

The employment opportunity offered by the construction company "Nan Costruzioni," with headquarters on Via Rossi in Volla, played a significant role in the evaluation. The owner agreed to hire the young man as a laborer, working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

According to the judge, further prolongation of the detention would risk "causing serious harm to the person concerned, jeopardizing his social rehabilitation." The requirements: strict hours and a ban on associating with criminals.

Probation was granted "provisionally" pending the decision of the Supervisory Court. The requirements imposed are stringent:

The picture: a measure aimed at reintegration

Probation, provided for by Article 47 of the Penitentiary System, allows the convicted person to serve his sentence in his own social environment, under constant supervision and with a structured rehabilitation program.

In the case of Vrilli, represented by the lawyer Giuseppe Gallo, the magistrate found that all requirements were met, emphasizing the boy's "very young age" and the existence of a concrete job opportunity, considered crucial to his reintegration. The Supervisory Court will now decide whether to confirm the measure.
