Naples – A real turning point in the fight against the eco-monsters of the Land of Fires. The Prefect of Naples, Michele Di Bari, decisively accelerated the prevention plan against illegal dumping and toxic fires, bringing together, on the afternoon of December 4th, the mayors of the 56 municipalities in the metropolitan area most affected by the phenomenon.
The goal is ambitious: to cover the most at-risk areas with a dedicated and integrated video surveillance system, effectively transforming the territory into an "invisible network" for 24-hour surveillance. These aren't just cameras, but an infrastructure designed to communicate in real time.
The Architecture of the New Control
The operational heart of this new project will be the joint control room already operational since last October at the Campania Carabinieri Forestry Command. The new municipal video surveillance network will be fully connected to this nerve center, ensuring a comprehensive overview and immediate response from all forces involved.
During the meeting, the Prefect asked the Municipalities for a concrete and rapid commitment:
Check existing systems: Evaluate the functionality of cameras already in operation.

Connection to the unified network: Provide the technical data for connection to the joint control room.
Targeted projects: Direct new investments and ongoing projects towards the objective of strengthening the prevention of environmental crimes.
Training and Regulation: The Homogeneity of Interventions
Technological integration will be accompanied by a common environmental training program. This initiative is crucial for disseminating consistent tools and intervention methods, ensuring that each agency operates with the same effectiveness. Particular attention will be paid to the innovations introduced by the recent Legislative Decree No. 116 of August 8, 2025, which increased sanctions and mechanisms for combating environmental crimes.
To support field operations, the Carabinieri will distribute specific handbooks, providing practical and up-to-date guidance for interventions.
The meeting, which marked the resumption of a common front, was attended by all the main security and control authorities: the regional commander of the Carabinieri Forestry Corps, representatives of the Police Headquarters, the provincial Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza commands, the Highway Police, the Army Commander (Campania Group II – Operation Safe Roads), and representatives of the Special Commissioner for the Suburbs and the Commissioner for the Land of Fires. The united efforts of central institutions, law enforcement agencies, and local authorities finally seem poised to deliver the final blow to the toxic fire phenomenon.

The Prefect's new initiative seems promising, and we hope the cameras will be effective. But it's also important that mayors truly commit to solving the problem of illegal dumping and toxic fires.
