Naples – The offensive against widespread lawlessness and environmental degradation in the eastern suburbs of Naples continues unabated. This morning, Carabinieri from the Provincial Command laid siege to the Roma settlement on Via del Riposo, in the Poggioreale neighborhood. This "high-impact" operation aimed not only at surveying those living on the city's outskirts, but also at defusing veritable ecological bombs hidden among the makeshift dwellings.

The census: the numbers of the operation

Officers from the Poggioreale company, supported by Municipal Police officers, combed the Roma camp, their third target after recent checks on Via Grimaldi and Via del Macello. The demographic assessment paints a picture of a "ghost population": 93 people residing in the settlement have been identified. Of these, 22 are minors.

The sobering data, however, concerns adults: out of 71 people identified, 20 already have criminal records, almost a third of the camp's adult population.

The operation also uncovered a worrying environmental crime. During the raid, officers caught a 26-year-old Romanian man operating a car packed with household appliances and ferrous scrap. The man was in an area adjacent to his living unit, which had been transformed into an open-air landfill.

In another common area of the camp, law enforcement officers found a massive pile of hazardous materials: washing machines, microwave ovens, water heaters, and scrap metal piled up unsecured.

A total of 30 cubic meters of hazardous waste were seized, ready for illegal disposal or burning. All the material was handed over to a licensed company for removal, while four abandoned vehicles were also seized, wrecks that were contributing to the degradation of the area.
