Naples – The Public Prosecutor's Office has requested a two-year prison sentence for the Vecchio Pellegrini doctor charged with manslaughter. The victim, Anna Siena, 36, died on January 18, 2019, after being examined three days earlier for severe abdominal pain.
The woman, unaware that she was pregnant with a deceased fetus, was discharged with a simple prognosis of lumbosciatica and a prescription for painkillers. The autopsy revealed a tragic truth: the pain was caused by the retention of the dead fetus in the uterus, which led to disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome (DIC), which culminated in fatal hemorrhagic shock.

"Death could have been prevented with a proper examination," thunders the coroner's report cited by the prosecutor. The medical examiner did not detect pregnancy or complications, despite the obvious symptoms.
Anna's family, represented by lawyers Angelo and Sergio Pisani, is following the trial with anger and grief. The civil plaintiffs' and defense lawyers' oral arguments are scheduled for January 12th, the date of the sentencing, which could shed light on a case that has once again cast a spotlight on diagnostic deficiencies in Neapolitan hospitals.
