Naples – The judicial truth about the murder of police officer Domenico Attianese, who fell at 40 while trying to stop a robbery in Pianura, is solidifying nearly four decades later.

The First Section of the Naples Court of Appeal has confirmed the 30-year prison sentence for Giovanni Rendina, considered one of the two bandits involved in the crime committed on December 6, 1986, inside the Romanelli jewelry store.

The decision fully reflects the position of the Attorney General's Office, which on November 19th had already requested that the first-instance verdict be upheld. Rendina's position, due to his health, had been separated from the main trial, which led to the 30-year sentence of the other defendant, Salvatore Allard, on July 23, 2024.

In the courtroom, lawyer Gianmario Siani, representing the policeman's wife and two daughters, also urged that the sentence be upheld.

On that December 6th, 39 years ago, violence erupted in broad daylight. The robbers, guns drawn, burst into the jewelry store, immobilizing the owners and beginning to empty the windows. Meanwhile, one of Attianese's daughters, then just fourteen, happened to be in front of the store.

She instantly realized that something was wrong and, terrified, called her father, who was at home a few steps from the shop.

The officer didn't hesitate: he ran toward the jewelry store to protect his family and prevent the robbery. A furious fight ensued. Attianese was disarmed, then a shot fired at point-blank range took his life, hitting him in the head.

A murder that remained unsolved for years: the first trial, in 1996, ended with the acquittal of the defendants.

The new judicial process, launched thanks to the reopening of the case, has rewritten that dark chapter of history. But for the family, time has not eased the pain. "The real life sentence is the one we are condemned to," Carla Attianese, the police officer's daughter, had said in recent months. A sentence that today, after yet another conviction, weighs like a millstone.
