Avellino - A new, serious episode of violence has rocked the Avellino "Bellizzi" prison. Yesterday afternoon, yet another attack resulted in a prison officer being taken to the emergency room, reinforcing the critical security situation within the Irpinia facility.

Raffaele Troise, Head of the Gau Uilpa Penitentiary Police Secretariat of Avellino, reported the incident and reconstructed the dynamics of the attack.

 Argument ended in assault

According to initial reports, an inmate had gone to the prison infirmary. There, for reasons currently under investigation, a violent argument broke out with the officer on duty. The argument quickly escalated: the inmate physically attacked the officer, assaulting him.

Only the prompt and decisive intervention of the General Surveillance and the staff who immediately rushed to their colleague's aid prevented far more serious consequences, managing to contain and subdue the attacker. The injured officer was immediately transported to the "Moscati" hospital for treatment.

The union raises the alarm: "The only fault is enforcing the rules."

The Uilpa Penitentiary Police union expressed its full solidarity with the officer involved, but raised the tone of its protest, pointing to the structural and management shortcomings that fueled the climate of tension.

"We are calling for exemplary measures that will act as a serious deterrent," Troise declares, "against inmates who commit assaults. Prison Police personnel are solely 'guilty' of wanting to enforce prison rules and, therefore, simply doing their duty."

The attack, according to the union, is a symptom of Avellino's chronic crisis. In addition to the already notorious overcrowding, the situation is made unmanageable by the constant arrival of inmates transferred from other prisons, often classified as "order and security," which further congests the prison.

This influx of inmates, Troise denounces, is contrasted by a culpable slowness in outgoing transfers, despite numerous reports of inmates displaying "attitudes that disrupt order and security and total disregard for internal regulations."

The union is calling for an immediate change of direction to protect the safety of staff who work in increasingly extreme conditions every day.
