Montesano sulla Marcellana – Another life lost on the asphalt of Campania. A 75-year-old man was struck and killed last night while walking along State Road 19, near the Scalo junction.

Yet another victim of a silent massacre that has already claimed over 100 pedestrians on the region's roads since 2025, according to preliminary estimates by road safety observers.

The impact was devastating. The 75-year-old man was walking along the road when a car driven by a young local man violently struck him. There was nothing that could be done for the elderly man: the 118 paramedics, who promptly arrived on the scene along with the Carabinieri of the Sala Consilina Company, could only pronounce him dead.

The driver, in a state of shock, stopped a few meters after the impact to provide assistance. The Carabinieri have begun an investigation to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident and determine any liability, examining road conditions, visibility, and the vehicle's speed.

A regional emergency

The Montesano sulla Marcellana case is part of a dramatic regional picture. In 2025, Campania confirmed its position among the Italian regions with the highest number of pedestrian road fatalities, with an estimated 100 to 120 deaths in the first eleven months of the year. This figure highlights the lack of adequate infrastructure, inadequate lighting, and the dangers of roads lacking sidewalks and protected crossings.

The region's state and provincial roads, often narrow and poorly lit, become death traps for those forced to travel them on foot. The elderly, like the 75-year-old from Montesano, are the most vulnerable: less responsive, less visible, and often forced to walk on unprotected roads.

The security that isn't there

According to sustainable mobility experts, the high number of pedestrian fatalities in Campania is the result of decades of road planning focused exclusively on vehicles, ignoring the safety of pedestrians. Missing or poorly marked pedestrian crossings, excessive speeds, and poor road maintenance contribute to this daily massacre.

The latest fatal accident shines a spotlight on an emergency that can no longer be ignored. Urgent action is needed: reducing speed limits in residential areas and along rural roads, creating safe sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, providing adequate lighting, and promoting awareness campaigns for drivers and pedestrians.

It's very sad to see so many road accidents every year in Campania. I hope the authorities take stricter measures to ensure the safety of pedestrians, especially the elderly. The roads need to be safer.
