The Gospel of John recalls: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”It is the heart of Christmas, the mystery of God who becomes man in Jesus Christ, and which finds a concrete representation in the religious symbol par excellence: the nativity scene. A tradition born in 1223 thanks to San Francesco d'Assisi, who in Greccio gave life to the first living representation of the Nativity.
Also this year Mercato San Severino welcomes the suggestions of this tradition thanks to the artistic nativity scene by the Sant'Antonio Nativity Scene Group (GPSA), set up by 7 December to 18 January at Franciscan Convent of St. Anthony.
This work combines craftsmanship and creativity, preserving popular and cultural memory by recalling customs, traditions, and trades linked to the community's history. Its location in the convent founded in 1358, An authoritative example of Gothic architecture in the Irno Valley, it gives the nativity scene an added value: its setting in a place of great artistic and historical interest. Among the convent's other religious attractions, a chapel dedicated to the Madonna of Pompeii stands out, housing a canvas depicting the Virgin, once owned by Blessed Bartolo Longo.
An event that thus becomes an opportunity for visit and contemplation, to live a spiritual experience in line with the true meaning of Christmas.
The inauguration, scheduled for today, December 7th, at 19:00 PM, will present the public with new settings and details, while maintaining the spirit of the joyful news. The work presents itself as a blend of faith, art, and memory: a true act of devotion manifested in every figurine and every scene, capable of moving and telling of reborn hope.
Admission will be free throughout the duration of your stay and you can visit during the following times: Weekdays: 17:30 PM – 20:00 PM – Holidays: 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM and 17:00 PM – 20:00 PM.
