Among the busy streets of Greek's towerA routine morning of checks turned into a chase that led to the arrest of Rolando Gallo, 57, already known to law enforcement. Carabinieri officers from the mobile radio unit spotted him darting between cars, engaging in dangerous maneuvers while trying to navigate the city traffic. When officers ordered him to stop, he didn't stop, sparking a brief stampede that ended on Via Nazionale delle Puglie, where he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed without sustaining any injuries.
Once stopped and searched, the reason for the escape was discovered in the Honda's saddle: electrical equipment recently stolen from the production line of a well-known company for which Gallo himself worked. Eighteen kilos of copper and eight and a half kilos of silver, clearly kept with the intent of making them disappear quickly, confirmed the officers' suspicions and reconstructed the sequence of events of a theft committed shortly before.
The man was arrested on charges of improper robbery and resisting a public officer and is now awaiting trial. This incident refocuses attention on the role of local patrols and the swiftness of patrols, which were crucial in turning a stampede into a successful operation.
