Piazza Municipio returns to being the symbolic center of Neapolitan Christmas with the inauguration of the life-size Nativity scene, created by the master craftsmen of San Gregorio Armeno and presented to the public this afternoon. The ceremony, opened with a blessing from Monsignor Gennaro Matino, brought together institutions and key figures in the nativity scene tradition: Mayor Gaetano Manfredi, Councilor for Tourism and Productive Activities Teresa Armato, Prefect Michele di Bari, representatives of the participating artisans, and the artisans themselves, who brought to life a project destined to remain in the square until January 8, 2026.

The Nativity scene is the brainchild of the Botteghe di San Gregorio Armeno Aps association, which brings together most of the master craftsmen from the famous street in the historic center. The work was enriched by contributions from other local talents: tailors from the Le Mani di Napoli association crafted the Holy Family's clothes, while ceramists created amphorae and other scenic details. The gifts on display come from the Borgo Orefici and from master ceramists in collaboration with the Palizzi Institute. The main figures, modeled in the 18th-century nativity scene style and featuring stuffed bodies, wooden heads and limbs, and glass eyes, are housed in a large wooden and glass display cabinet that allows the work to be viewed from every side.

"With this life-size Nativity, we celebrate one of our city's most authentic traditions, the fruit of the talent and creativity of the artisans of San Gregorio Armeno and other Neapolitan excellences," said Manfredi, emphasizing the cultural value of the initiative and its ability to attract visitors. Armato noted that the work "reproduces the style of our 18th-century school for the benefit of many Neapolitans and will become a powerful tourist attraction for those visiting the city."

The scenic location in the heart of the square is no coincidence. The Nativity scene stands as the center of gravity between Palazzo San Giacomo, the Maschio Angioino, and the port, with Vesuvius in the background completing the scene. This positioning reflects the desire to make visible, indeed central, the profound connection between the city and nativity scene art, transforming one of Naples' most popular spaces into an open-air showcase dedicated to its history and identity.

The Nativity scene looks beautiful, and the work of the master craftsmen is evident, but I don't know if it will last long enough for those arriving after the holidays to see it.

Yes, I agree, the location could be improved to attract more visitors. The nativity scene tradition deserves to be further promoted and showcased to everyone.

The installation of the Nativity scene in Piazza Municipio is an important event for Naples, but I'm not sure it's visible enough for everyone. We hope tourists notice it and appreciate the artisans' work.
