Ariano Irpino – A meticulously orchestrated scam, involving multiple roles: first the troubled nephew, then the Revenue Agency employee.
But the plot came to an abrupt end when the Carabinieri of the Ariano Irpino Company stopped the scammer, a 27-year-old from the province of Naples already known to the police for similar precedents.
The criminal operation began with a phone call. The man, posing as the victim's nephew, contacted an elderly woman living in the nearby province of Foggia, weaving a dramatic story: his wife was being held at a Carabinieri station for a tax debt. Seven thousand euros were urgently needed to resolve the situation.
The woman, anxious about what she believed to be a relative in need, didn't hesitate. Shortly thereafter, the same scammer showed up at the door disguised as a phantom Revenue Agency official, tasked with collecting the money. The money was handed over without suspicion.
The turning point came when the man attempted a repeat. Again in Ariano Irpino, the 27-year-old attempted to repeat the scam by contacting another elderly person, this time introducing himself as a Carabinieri marshal. A fatal mistake: the police, already alerted, intercepted him in his car and stopped him.
During the arrest, in addition to the seven thousand euros stolen from the first victim, a quantity of narcotics was also found in the scammer's possession. The money was immediately returned to the elderly woman, while the 27-year-old was arrested.
