A dramatic accident on State Road 7Bis has raised questions about road safety, highlighting the escape of the responsible truck and the need for urgent regulatory changes to combat road piracy, while luck smiled on a driver who, miraculously, is.
A serious road accident occurred yesterday afternoon, December 23, along the State Road 7Bis Terra di Lavoro, a few meters before the Pomigliano-Acerra junction.
A truck violently rear-ended a gray Toyota Yaris, destroying its rear end and left side, before driving away without stopping to provide assistance.
According to the reconstruction, the car was travelling at low speed with the indicator on to take the exit when it was hit by the heavy vehicle.
The impact caused the car to skid, spinning several times, spinning out of control at least twice before coming to rest in the wrong lane.
The driver was surprisingly unharmed, but the car sustained serious damage and required the intervention of a tow truck through the insurance company. However, there was no trace of the responsible truck: the driver fled the scene, and the license plate number could not be obtained.
The incident was reported to Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a member of the Green Left Alliance, by a motorist who witnessed the scene.
"We are witnessing yet another incident of hit-and-run," Borrelli said. "One person is miraculously alive, while the person who caused the accident fled the scene as if nothing had happened. Thugs and impunity reign on our roads: this risks daily massacres that are too often dismissed as mere accidents."
The MP also takes issue with current legislation: "Those who drive heavy vehicles, as well as cars and motorcycles, should be aware that the road is not a free-for-all. Yet today, the rule of 'free for all' seems to apply. The Highway Code proposed by Minister Salvini does nothing to counter this trend: it doesn't strengthen checks, it doesn't increase penalties for hit-and-run drivers, and it doesn't protect those who respect the rules."
"We need an immediate change of pace," Borrelli concludes, "more enforcement, clear and swift penalties for those fleeing an accident, and effective tools to identify those responsible. The roads cannot continue to be a Wild West."
Finally, the MP invites any witnesses to come forward and provide any information useful for identifying the truck involved in the accident.
