On Monday afternoon, two off-duty police officers witnessed a suspicious exchange on Via Atellana in Caivano, leading to the arrest of a 60-year-old man with a criminal record for drug dealing. They later discovered over 86 grams of drugs and €7.000 in cash in his home.
Caivano – A banknote changing hands, a lightning-fast exchange, and a young man rushing away. This was the scene that presented itself to two off-duty State Police officers on Monday afternoon as they drove along Via Atellana in Caivano.
The apparent normality of the gesture concealed an illegal activity that led to the arrest of a 60-year-old local man, already known to law enforcement for specific previous drug-related convictions.
The officers, members of the General Prevention Office of the Naples Police Headquarters, didn't hesitate. They immediately halted the criminal investigation and, with the support of staff from the Afragola Police Station, apprehended the drug dealer.
The personal search yielded a package containing approximately 10 grams of hashish and the sum of 15 euros, likely the proceeds of the sale just completed.
The suspicion, however, didn't end with the street. Investigators, believing the man might be in possession of additional quantities of drugs, extended their search to the 60-year-old's home.
The house search yielded much more substantial discoveries: three packages of cocaine weighing a total of approximately 86 grams, another package of marijuana weighing approximately 5 grams, and a large sum of cash, approximately €7.000, divided into banknotes of various denominations.
The man was subsequently arrested for unlawful possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The operation is part of the extraordinary operations implemented by the Naples Police Headquarters to combat drug trafficking and illegal possession of weapons in the province.
The arrested man was taken to Poggioreale prison and placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who will hold a fast-track trial in the coming days. This operation confirms the effectiveness of surprise checks, even by off-duty officers, which allowed them to catch the drug dealer in the act without him realizing the presence of law enforcement.
