Naples – Bruno Petrone, the 18-year-old Angri footballer stabbed during the night between Thursday and Friday on Via Bisignano, in the heart of the Chiaia district, is in improved condition.
The young athlete, who plays in the Eccellenza league, underwent emergency surgery to remove his spleen at San Paolo Hospital. The prognosis remains guarded, but health workers remain cautiously optimistic as the hours pass.
Investigations are closing in
Investigators from the Naples Flying Squad are pursuing a hot lead to identify the perpetrators of the attack. The incident occurred in an area with numerous public and private security cameras that reportedly captured every stage of the stabbing.
The officers interviewed the friends who were with Petrone at the time of the incident and the boy's family members, in an attempt to reconstruct the dynamics and motivations behind the act.
The incident has brought youth violence back into the spotlight in the Baretti neighborhood, sparking protests from residents calling for a greater police presence. The ease with which young people who frequent Neapolitan nightlife have access to weapons is also a concern.
The bitterness of the sports world
Petrone, who made his Serie C debut with Sorrento in 2024, is currently signed by US Angri, a team in the province of Salerno. The club expressed "deep dismay and firm condemnation" for the incident.
President Claudio Anellucci commented on the incident: "We are deeply shocked and saddened by what happened to Bruno. We're talking about a good man, a young athlete who was simply living his life, and who today finds himself fighting after suffering an absurd and unacceptable act of violence.
On behalf of myself, the Angri Calcio club, and our entire sporting family, I express our deepest sympathy to Bruno and his loved ones, to whom we extend our deepest condolences. We strongly condemn all forms of violence, which have nothing to do with the values of sport and civil coexistence.
At this moment, our only thoughts are with Bruno: we are waiting for him, we support him, and we are certain that the strength he has shown on the pitch will help him in this difficult battle. Angri is with him, no ifs, ands, or buts.
The entire community of Angri, along with the city's institutions, stands united behind the club and the team, firmly condemning all forms of violence and reaffirming the values of respect, civility, and legality that must be the foundation of social coexistence and sport.
Mayor Cosimo Ferraioli stated: "I express my deepest sympathy to Bruno Petrone and his family, affected by yet another unacceptable episode of violence that shocks us all. Bruno is a young man, an athlete, a passionate and selfless young man who chose sport as a path to growth, certainly not the path of violence. The entire city of Angri and the local sports community extend their sincere condolences to him and his family, wishing him a speedy and complete recovery."
Councilor Salvatore Mercurio also commented on the matter: "What happened to Bruno Petrone deeply affects us as administrators and parents. Episodes like this reinforce the belief that sport must increasingly be an educational and social tool, capable of instilling positive values and countering all forms of aggression and oppression. Our sincere thoughts go out to Bruno and we wish him a speedy recovery. We extend our sincere condolences to Bruno from all of Angri, with the hope that he can overcome this terrible ordeal."

It's truly sad that things like this happen in a city like Naples. Young people should be protected and not subjected to violence. We hope that justice takes its course and that Bruno recovers soon.
