Campi Flegrei awaken to tremors: seismic swarm at dawn, epicenter at Solfatara

The magnitude 2.0 peak recorded at 4:42 a.m. woke residents between Pozzuoli and the Phlegraean Fields. 2025 will be a record year for seismic activity, with over 8.500 events.

Pozzuoli – The earth is shaking again in the Phlegraean Fields. A new seismic swarm struck the Phlegraean Fields in the early hours of Friday, December 19th, once again causing concern among residents, who were awakened in the middle of the night by vibrations from underground.

The dynamics of the event

According to data from the Vesuvius Observatory's seismographs, the swarm began at 04:42 AM. The main shock, with a magnitude of 2.0, was located in the Solfatara area at a depth of 3,4 kilometers. A few minutes later, at 04:50 AM, a second event with a magnitude of 1.8 was recorded, with its epicenter on Via Antiniana.

Despite the low magnitude, the shallow depth of the hypocenters made the tremors clearly felt not only in Pozzuoli, but also in the western neighborhoods of Naples, particularly Agnano and Bagnoli, where several reports reached social media within minutes of the event.

A 2025 of seismic records

Data released by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) paints a picture of persistent bradyseismic activity. Today's event is just the latest in a long series of events marking a particularly intense year:

2025 (to date): 8.557 localized tremors.

2024: 6.745 seismic events.

2023: 6.066 seismic events.

The trend shows a constant increase in the frequency of events over the last three years, although the vast majority of these are of very low magnitude and are not felt by the population.

The Municipality's budget

This morning, the Mayor of Pozzuoli released an official statement to reassure residents, confirming the end of seismic activity related to this specific swarm.

The Vesuvius Observatory has announced the end of the swarm that began at 4:42 AM. A total of five earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 0.0 were recorded. The situation remains under constant monitoring by experts and the competent authorities.

No damage or injury has been reported so far, but continued vigilance remains focused on the evolution of the phenomenon, which continues to impact daily life in the Phlegraean Fields.
