Pozzuoli – The earth trembles again in the Phlegraean Fields. A seismic swarm struck the volcanic area on the morning of Monday, December 15, with two separate events recorded by the Vesuvius Observatory of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.
The first tremor, with a magnitude of 1.9, was recorded at 7:47 a.m., with its epicenter in the Monte Cigliano area, in the municipality of Pozzuoli. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 3 kilometers, consistent with the typical activity of the Phlegraean caldera.
Just four minutes later, at 7:51 a.m., seismographs recorded a second, less intense event. The quake, with a magnitude of 1.1, had its epicenter near the Italian Air Force base, also in the municipality of Pozzuoli.
The seismic swarm is part of the bradyseismic phenomenon that has characterized the Campi Flegrei area for years, one of the most closely monitored volcanic regions in the world. INGV monitoring instruments constantly record seismic activity and ground deformation throughout the caldera.
Local authorities confirm that no damage to people or property occurred, nor were any significant disruptions reported for residents. The monitoring network continues to follow the situation in real time.
