Campobasso – Flour and grains were seized from the Di Vita family home in Pietracatella, as part of an investigation into the deaths of a 50-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter from suspected food poisoning.

The apartment remains sealed by order of the Campobasso Prosecutor's Office, which has entrusted the investigation to the Flying Squad.

Yesterday, inspectors from the Hygiene and Prevention Office collected the cereal products for analysis to detect contamination, including accidental contamination. Among the leads being investigated is possible contact with rat poison linked to a disinfestation performed months ago at a local mill, the family's flour supplier. "This is one of the exploratory hypotheses, without definitive confirmation," investigative sources specify.

The tests are covering all food items in the pantry, refrigerator, and any Christmas leftovers already collected. From a health perspective, ASReM is currently ruling out a definitive diagnosis: the prevailing hypothesis is food poisoning, which needs to be identified, not just through food, but also with possible chemical, environmental, or inhalation causes.

The Cardarelli Poison Control Center in Naples, the Spallanzani Institute in Rome, and the Gemelli Polyclinic have been involved in testing for fungal poisoning. The investigation awaits scientific results and autopsies scheduled for tomorrow, December 31st.

This is a truly worrying and sad situation. The deaths of two people so close together make us reflect on how dangerous the food we eat can be. We hope the investigation will clarify what really happened in that house.
