Campobasso – A community in shock and a family torn apart by what should have been a moment of celebration. Pietracatella mourns the loss of Antonella Di Ielsi, 50, and her daughter Sara, just fifteen, who died within hours of each other at Cardarelli Hospital in Campobasso.

The deaths were caused by suspected food poisoning, which left the two women with no chance of survival. The father remains hospitalized in serious condition and may be urgently transferred to a specialized clinic in Rome.

The killer mushroom hypothesis

Although initial reports had pointed to a fish-based dinner, investigators' attention has recently shifted to the consumption of poisonous mushrooms. The illness began on December 27th, immediately after a family meal.

However, the rescue efforts are now under scrutiny by the judiciary and regional health authorities.

The mystery of the resignations

According to investigative sources, the family presented to the Cardarelli emergency room twice before being admitted to the hospital yesterday. On both occasions, after ruling out botulism, doctors decided to discharge them with a diagnosis of food poisoning.

A delay that could have proved fatal: the symptoms, rather than regressing, worsened dramatically during the night between December 27th and 28th, leading first to the death of the very young Sara and, the following morning, to that of her mother in intensive care.

Internal investigations and mourning

The Molise Regional Health Authority (ASREM) immediately initiated an internal investigation to meticulously reconstruct every step of the medical protocol applied. The goal is to determine whether the severity of the situation was identifiable during the first two hospital admissions.

Meanwhile, the village of Pietracatella is gripped by silence. "We are shocked; it's a tragedy that leaves us speechless," said Mayor Antonio Tommasone, expressing the condolences of a town in disbelief at such an absurd and premature end.
