Increased security in public squares and nightlife areas, extended public transportation hours, and a crackdown on drunk driving and illegal firecrackers: this is the package of measures put in place for the New Year's Eve holidays in Naples, finalized today at the Prefecture during the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety, chaired by Prefect Michele di Bari.

The meeting was attended by Antonio De Iesu, City Councilor for Municipal Police and Legal Affairs, Maurizio Agricola, Police Commissioner, and the provincial leaders of the Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, and Metropolitan Police. The meeting, which followed other discussions held in recent days, developed extraordinary measures to ensure public order, security, and the proper use of services, especially in light of the international context deemed "sensitive."

The primary focus will be on events with large crowds: particular attention will be paid to the event in Piazza del Plebiscito and to areas expected to attract large crowds, especially young people, including the Lungomare, Piazza Municipio, and Rotonda Diaz, where open-air nightclubs are scheduled. The plan calls for operational coordination between the police forces, local police, and metropolitan police, with targeted patrols and services in the most exposed areas.

To manage the expected increase in traffic on peak days, enhanced public transport services will be activated, with extended hours during peak periods. At the same time, roadside checks will be intensified, particularly during the evening and night hours. These checks will focus on driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, improper use of cell phones while driving, and, more generally, enforcement of traffic laws.

Illegal fireworks also remain a major concern. Law enforcement agencies will intensify their efforts to monitor, prevent, and repress the sale of unauthorized pyrotechnic products. In a circular, the prefect also called on local mayors to implement initiatives to prevent and combat the production and sale of illegal fireworks, involving local police.

The same communication reiterates the need to avoid using explosive devices in particularly sensitive urban areas: near hospitals, nursing homes, seniors' facilities, and in areas with a high concentration of animals, as well as in any location where explosions and blasts could compromise safety, public order, or the performance of essential activities.

Finally, the prefect invited citizens to collaborate, to respect the rules and to promptly report any dangerous situations to the competent authorities, also relaunching the Municipality's appeal to favour public transport for travel during holidays.

It's important to have more stringent controls to ensure public safety in public squares during the holidays. I hope the police can do a good job and prevent problems with fireworks and alcohol.
