These numbers weigh like boulders and speak to a daily battle behind bars. In December alone, 62 smartphones and approximately one kilo of drugs were seized in Poggioreale prison. The overall figure for 2025 is 540 phones and 16 kilos of narcotics intercepted in prisons.

The data was released by the USPP. "These numbers aren't just statistics, but a tangible sign that the State is present thanks to the prison police, which guarantees a safe and legal detention environment," state National President Moretti and Regional Secretary Auricchio.

The union, however, points to working conditions. "Staff are working understaffed," they emphasize, forcefully reiterating the call for structural improvements. "Detention units need to be shielded with the immediate installation of signal inhibitors, such as jammers, to prevent organized crime, especially from maintaining contact with the outside world."

The USPP is once again calling for increased staffing, particularly in Poggioreale. "We're 180 officers short of the current staffing level," Moretti and Auricchio emphasize, also calling for tougher sanctions. "All legal benefits for inmates found in possession of cell phones and drugs must be eliminated; only then can a real deterrent effect be achieved."

As the emergency continues, the union recognizes its staff. "The Poggioreale prison police have demonstrated commendable excellence, ensuring internal order and security," they conclude.

The numbers are truly shocking and make one think about how difficult the situation is in Poggioreale prison. The prison police do an important job, but it's clear there are staffing issues and more attention is needed.
