Overnight in Castellammare, the Carabinieri intensified checks, identifying 493 people and fining 10 riders for modified scooters, highlighting the risk to road safety and traffic violations.
Castellammare – A night of widespread checks took place in the nightlife of Castellammare and the streets of Gragnano, with Carabinieri officers from the local unit targeting two parallel phenomena: food delivery and drug dealing.
The operation's results are significant: 493 people identified, 169 vehicles searched, and 58 fines issued.
At the heart of the action were traffic enforcement checks, with a particular focus on delivery riders. There were also a number of missed orders: the police fined 10 people for illegal and dangerous modifications to the vehicles' construction.
The focus has been on classic delivery "setups": insulated cases and pizza boxes welded in a haphazard and unstable manner to the end of scooter seats. These are genuine examples of "illegal design" that compromise the stability of the vehicle, jeopardizing the safety of the rider.
At the same time, two people were reported for drunk driving. But the struggle with illegality didn't stop there. Local enforcement also included a dedicated drug-related issue: 14 young people were reported to the Prefecture for possession of small quantities of narcotics.
The most cinematic discovery, however, came from a hiding place worthy of a thriller. The officers, searching the area, found 20 grams of cocaine, ready for the retail market, hidden in cracks in a low wall.
A concealment system that did not, however, fool the expert eye of the Carabinieri, bringing to a close with a dramatic turn of events an operation involving illegal trafficking and systematically violated traffic rules.

And then they're stealing more than ten scooters a day and they don't do anything
The Carabinieri checks have been helpful for road safety, but I question whether these fines are truly effective. Many riders will continue to modify their scooters despite the fines, so a different approach is needed to solve the problem.
