Vico Equense– A life lived in the shadows and ended in the darkness of a train tunnel. This is the profile of Luigi Saba, the 59-year-old from Pompeii identified as the victim of the tragic accident that occurred Friday afternoon on the Circumvesuviana line, between Castellammare di Stabia and Vico Equense.

To identify the battered body, the Carabinieri of the Sorrento Company, led by Captain Mario Gioia, had to resort to fingerprints and analysis of the phone's SIM card. Luigi had no identification. A former factory worker, he had not worked for years: his life was marked by progressive isolation, exacerbated by psychological fragility that had led him to sever all ties with the outside world.

"He was a very lonely and extremely reserved person," neighbors said, describing a man who could only be seen on his bicycle, the same one that accompanied him until his final, tragic moment. In his home in Pompeii, found in perfect order, no suicide note or clues were found that could explain his actions.

The dynamics: a journey of no return

Investigators' reconstruction of the incident outlines an unusual route. On Friday morning, Luigi departed from Torre Annunziata aboard an EAV train headed for Sorrento, taking his bike with him. Upon reaching the Vico Equense station, he disembarked from the train but, instead of exiting toward the city, he took the train tunnel in the opposite direction, returning toward Castellammare.

The nagging question remains: was it deliberate or a tragic error of judgment? The man may have tried to backtrack along the tracks without realizing the imminent danger. The answer lies within the walls of that tunnel, where pedestrian access is strictly prohibited.

A truly complex case, I wonder what really happened to Luigi Saba. There are many aspects to consider when talking about isolation and mental health, and I think it's important to discuss them.

The article describes a very sad incident. It's hard to understand how someone could find themselves in such a tragic situation. We hope the community can reflect on these lonely lives and how we can help them.
