The water emergency that is gripping Campania, compromising daily life, economic development and essential services, is destined to hit straight to the heart of democratic institutions.
On Wednesday, December 10, starting at 11:00 a.m., the mayors of Irpinia and Sannio will depart their communities for a united and determined demonstration: a static and peaceful demonstration in Piazza Montecitorio, in front of the Chamber of Deputies. Wearing the tricolor sash and in full compliance with the regulations, the mayors will raise their voices to call the attention of Parliament and the Government to the "extremely serious emergency" that has been dragging on for months.
The demands put forward by the mayors are clear and peremptory. At the heart of the protest is the need for formal recognition of the state of water emergency and the urgent establishment of a special national fund for the renovation and digitalization of the currently outdated and leaky networks.
Not just resources: the mayors are also calling for the evaluation of a commissioner structure with the power to effectively coordinate planning and construction, expediting necessary interventions. Finally, a crucial point concerns the source areas: a rebalancing of interregional water transfers is required, finally taking into account the rights and needs of those areas that donate water.
The mayors of a dozen municipalities have already joined the mobilization, including Ariano Irpino, Pietradefusi, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, Nusco, Calitri, San Giorgio del Sannio, Solofra, and Montoro.
Their united presence in Rome aims to affirm an inescapable principle: water is a vital and indispensable resource for the future of Irpinia and Sannio and can no longer be held hostage by delays, waste, and territorial imbalances. "The water emergency," the promoters declare, "must be recognized as a national priority. It's time for immediate responses.
