Naples – A weekend marked by yet another escalation in muggings and robberies in the railway area, one of the city's main transportation hubs, crowded these days with tourists and residents.

Two arrests in the space of a few hours have reignited the issue of urban safety and the need for a more widespread police presence, especially during the holiday season when thousands of people flock to the central station, the historic center, and shopping areas.

Late in the evening, officers from the State Police's Office for General Prevention and Public Aid arrested a 25-year-old Moroccan man with a criminal record, including specific criminal records, and an illegal immigration status. He faces charges of aggravated robbery, illegal possession of weapons or objects capable of causing offence, and resisting a public official.

The police officers, during a territorial control operation, were passing through Piazza Garibaldi when they were approached by two men who pointed out a man nearby, saying that shortly before, he had stolen the cell phone from one of them and, to ensure his escape, had threatened them with a box cutter.

Upon reaching the suspect, the officers subdued him after a violent struggle, finding him in possession of the stolen phone and the knife. The phone was returned to the victim, and the man was taken into custody.

A few hours earlier, in the afternoon, another State Police operation had resulted in the arrest of a 19-year-old Moroccan man for robbery. In this case, officers responded to a report from Via Nicola Mignogna to the operations room. There, they determined that the young man had been stopped by a business employee.

According to the reconstruction, the 19-year-old had just robbed a passerby and his wife on Via Soprammuro, in the heart of Porta Nolana, shoving him and snatching his necklace. He then fled through the alleys of the historic center, ending in Via Mignogna, where the shopkeeper, with considerable difficulty, managed to subdue him until the police arrived.

There needs to be a greater presence of law enforcement on the streets

These incidents are fueling concern among residents, merchants, and visitors, in a strategic area of the city that should be a calling card for Naples. The railway area—between Vasto, Piazza Garibaldi, and Porta Nolana—remains under observation: checks, the Police Headquarters assures, will continue "at full speed" in the coming days, with a particular focus on robberies and drug dealing.

But the issue remains open: with the increase in crowds in the city, especially during the holidays, the demand for security also grows. Naples, now more than ever an international tourist destination, needs patrolled streets and a constant police presence so that citizens and visitors can feel truly safe.

It's important to talk about safety in the city, but there are also other problems like traffic and cleanliness. I hope the authorities will do something to improve the overall situation, not just the crime rate.
