Caserta – An extortion scheme that continued for over fifteen years, with demands for money and valuables enforced using mafia methods. This is what the Carabinieri of the Capua Company's operational unit are alleging against six individuals, who were arrested on December 19th by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate of the Naples Prosecutor's Office.

The actions were carried out between Pignataro Maggiore, Naples, and Luisago, in the Como area. The suspects are considered seriously suspected of attempted and consummated extortion, aggravated by mafia methods, and are considered members of the Ligato-Lubrano Camorra clan, active in the upper and middle Caserta area.

According to the investigation, between 2008 and 2023, a local jeweler was forced, following repeated and insistent requests, to hand over precious objects with an estimated total value of approximately 70 euros.

The investigation also documented a new extortion attempt, scheduled between January and December 2025: the suspects allegedly demanded additional jewelry and a Rolex watch worth approximately €30. When the victim refused, they allegedly revealed plans for an imminent violent retaliatory attack, to be carried out before the Christmas holidays, to force her to pay another €50 in cash, as well as additional valuables.

During searches of personal property, homes, and vehicles, the Carabinieri seized €6.600 in cash, believed to be of dubious origin, from the home of one of the suspects. In another home, they found approximately 17 kilograms of gunpowder, a dagger with a blade approximately 20 centimeters long, and a pair of knuckledusters.

Five of the suspects were taken to the Santa Maria Capua Vetere prison, while the sixth was transferred to the Como prison. After preliminary hearings, the preliminary investigation judges of the Santa Maria Capua Vetere and Como courts confirmed the arrests of some of the suspects and ordered pretrial detention for all of them.

The subject of this article is very serious, and it makes us reflect on how the mafia manages to operate in our territory. It's disturbing to think that for so many years no one has done anything to stop them. Justice must be stronger.
