Florence – A bag that was too heavy and a look that was too nervous. These details were enough for the Railway Police officers to unmask a young underage scammer at the Santa Maria Novella station. His luggage contained jewelry worth €15, stolen from a scam orchestrated against a couple in their fifties.

The scene unfolds Wednesday afternoon on the tracks of Florence's main railway station. The boy, alone, clutches a heavy bag that he clumsily tries to hide between his legs. His insistent glances at the patrolling officers betray his nervousness. When the officers approach him, the minor stammers an excuse: he has to leave for Naples immediately.

But it was precisely the bag's unusual weight and suspicious behavior that aroused the officers' suspicions. Inside, hidden under a jacket, rings, bracelets, and necklaces emerged. Many were kept in packages bearing the name of the same jewelry store, a detail that would prove crucial in tracing the victims.

The fake marshal scam

The investigation quickly reconstructed the dynamics. A couple in their fifties had been contacted by telephone by a self-proclaimed law enforcement officer. The message: the license plate of the car registered to the husband had been cloned and used in a robbery. The man needed to urgently go to a distant office to file a report and allow the investigation to proceed.

As the husband left the house, a second phone call reached his wife. The same fake marshal, with a new request: collect all the valuables in the house and make a detailed list. A "court delegate" would arrive shortly to collect them. The woman, frightened and convinced she was helping the investigation, handed over everything: thousands of euros in jewelry she had accumulated over the years.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of the Railway Police, the valuables were recovered. The woman immediately recognized her jewelry among those seized from the minor, who has now been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud. This case confirms the effectiveness of station checks and the importance of always being wary of suspicious phone calls, even when the caller impersonates a law enforcement official.
