Naples – It all began in a city plagued by smuggling, at a time when organized crime was on the verge of a resurgence. On January 9th, Gomorrah – The Origins, the highly anticipated prequel to the crime saga that has conquered over 190 territories worldwide, will debut on Sky and stream on Now.
The return to Naples in 1977
The new series, produced by Sky Studios and Cattleya (part of ITV Studios), takes viewers back to Naples in 1977, a city undergoing a period of social and economic transformation. Six episodes chronicle the criminal upbringing of a very young Pietro Savastano, played by Luca Lubrano, destined to become the feared boss of Secondigliano.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of a poverty-stricken metropolis, where cigarette smuggling is the dominant underground economy and heroin is about to make its devastating entrance. An origin story that promises to reveal the roots of the power of one of the most iconic characters in the original saga.
Directed by Marco D'Amore
The first four episodes are directed by Marco D'Amore, the unforgettable star of Gomorrah – The Series, who also serves as artistic supervisor and co-writer. The final two episodes are directed by Francesco Ghiaccio (Dolcissime, Un posto sicuro).
The series is created by Leonardo Fasoli, Maddalena Ravagli, and Roberto Saviano, whose Mondadori bestseller of the same name inspired the entire saga. The screenplays are by Fasoli, Ravagli, and D'Amore, while international distribution is handled by Beta Film.
A cast of new faces and veterans
Alongside Luca Lubrano, the cast brings together numerous Italian talents. Francesco Pellegrino plays Angelo 'A Sirena, a charismatic gangster who runs a gambling den for the Villa clan. Flavio Furno plays 'O Paisano, a prisoner who, from prison, builds a "new Camorra" project, without slaves or bosses.
Tullia Venezia plays the young Imma, a high school student attending the conservatory and dreaming of America. Renato Russo plays Michele Villa, known as 'O Santo, heir to one of the Neapolitan aristocratic criminal families, while Ciro Capano plays Don Antonio Villa, the boss of Forcella.
The cast is completed by Biagio Forestieri as Corrado Arena, king of cigarette smuggling, Fabiola Balestriere as Annalisa Magliocca (the future Scianel), a young mother victim of domestic violence, and Veronica D'Elia as Anna, 'O Paisano's sister.
Antonio Buono, Ciro Burzo, and Luigi Cardone play Mimì, Tresette, and 'A Macchietta, respectively, friends of Angelo 'A Sirena. Pietro's group includes Antonio Del Duca, Mattia Francesco Cozzolino, Junior Rancel Rodriguez Arcia, and young Antonio Incalza as Lello, Manuele, Toni, and Fucariello.
The legacy of a cult saga
Gomorrah – The Origins aims to provide a fresh perspective on the criminal dynamics that have shaped the modern criminal world, capturing a crucial era in understanding the evolution of the Neapolitan Camorra. A return to the origins that promises to enrich the narrative universe of the original series, maintaining its dramatic intensity and raw depiction of criminal reality.
