A spiral of violence transformed a stretch of the A2 motorway into an urban battlefield. Two months after the serious riots that erupted near the San Mango Piemonte rest area, the investigation conducted by the State Police has led to a decisive breakthrough: 30 people are under investigation for the clashes between organized football fans from Casertana and Catania.
The dynamics of the ambush
On the afternoon of October 11th, the stretch of highway in the province of Salerno became the scene of full-blown guerrilla warfare. The two factions clashed at a moment of extreme tension: the Sicilian supporters were returning from the away game in Picerno, while the Campanian supporters were returning from the match in Giugliano.
According to the reconstruction by the Salerno DIGOS officers, with the support of their colleagues in Caserta and Catania, the two ultra groups didn't limit themselves to verbal insults. The findings reveal mutual attacks carried out with an improvised arsenal: smoke bombs, explosives, clubs, and blunt objects. The chaos paralyzed traffic in both directions, trapping dozens of defenseless motorists who witnessed scenes of gratuitous violence.

The judicial provision
The criminal report, filed with the Salerno Public Prosecutor's Office (and with the Juvenile Court for the two suspects still under the age of eighteen), raises several charges against the 30 individuals reported at large.
The investigation used images from the service area's video surveillance cameras and footage acquired by forensic teams, which allowed the most active participants in the disturbances to be identified.
The Quaestor's iron fist
In addition to the criminal proceedings, the thirty ultras have already entered the administrative process. The Salerno Police Chief has initiated procedures to issue DASPO (bans from attending sports events). If confirmed, the measures will keep them away from stadiums for several years, confirming the authorities' firm stance against violence in the world of football.
The incident reignites the debate over the safety of fans' travel, a topic that continues to concern the Observatory on Sports Events, especially along the main highways in Southern Italy.
