A traffic accident involving one of the cars carrying Naples prosecutor Nicola Gratteri's escort occurred late Christmas morning on State Road 106, between Soverato and Locri, near Santa Caterina dello Ionio. Three minor injuries and extensive damage to the vehicles were reported.
The collision occurred around 12:15 p.m. The magistrate, originally from Gerace, was traveling in a three-car convoy when the leading car was suddenly cut off by a Nissan coming from the oncoming lane. According to initial reconstructions, the driver made a left turn despite the continuous line, without stopping and crossing into the lane of the emergency vehicle, which was traveling with its lights activated.
The collision was inevitable. The escort car attempted an emergency maneuver but crashed into the wall of a bar, also hitting a parked car. Only by chance did a man near the wall manage to escape, avoiding far more serious injuries.

Safety procedures were activated immediately. The two cars not involved in the accident, one of which was occupied by Gratteri, stopped at a distance to ensure the magistrate's protection, while the head of the escort alerted emergency services. Carabinieri and emergency personnel responded to the scene, providing assistance to the driver of the Nissan, the officers involved, and the man present near the crash site. All were transported to the hospital for checks, but their conditions are not life-threatening.
The prosecutor, adhering to the strict protocols established for his safety, remained in the vehicle but constantly monitored the operations, checking on the conditions of the injured and the evolving situation. Once the rescue operations and the necessary formalities were completed, the convoy was able to continue its journey.
