Macerata – He posed as a police officer to break into a home and steal a lifetime of keepsakes. But the deception of a 23-year-old Campanian, originally from Acerra and living in Casalnuovo di Napoli, was shattered by the memory and forethought of an elderly couple from Macerata.

The young man was reported at large by the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit on charges of conspiracy to commit fraud.

The “double deception” technique

The incident, which occurred last October, follows a routine, unfortunately well-worn pattern, executed with exceptional technical expertise. It all began with a phone call: a man, introducing himself as a member of the Carabinieri, advised an 83-year-old man from Macerata that the jewelry in his home needed to be checked to verify its "legitimate provenance."

To ensure the scheme was successful, the scammers used a trick to isolate their victims: while the pretender spoke on the landline, an accomplice kept the couple's cell phone lines busy, preventing them from contacting relatives or the real police to confirm the identity of the suspect.

The theft and the investigations

Moments after the call, the 23-year-old showed up at the couple's door. Introducing himself as the caller's colleague, he demanded the gold jewelry be handed over for "investigation," and then fled immediately after taking the loot.

Despite their shock, the victims were able to provide extremely precise details to investigators. Thanks to a meticulous investigation, officers from the Macerata Company were able to identify the suspect.

The final turning point came with the photographic identification: the spouses had no hesitation in identifying the young man from Campania as the man who had entered their home.

The appeal of the Army

The operation concluded with the young man being reported to the Judicial Authorities, while investigations continue to identify the accomplice who coordinated the telephone scam. The Carabinieri of Macerata take this opportunity to reiterate their appeal to the public: "No member of the Police Force ever requests the handing over of money or jewelry, either by phone or in person.

If in doubt, it is essential to end the conversation and immediately call 112 from another line or after making sure that the previous communication has actually been interrupted."
