In the heart of the ghost town of Apice Vecchia, in the province of Benevento, stands the majestic Castello dell'Ettore, a fortress steeped in history that transforms into a fairytale setting during the winter months thanks to the Castello dell'Ettore Christmas Market. The event draws visitors from across Campania and beyond, offering a unique Christmas experience featuring lights, crafts, and historical reenactments.
Hector's Castle: a jewel suspended in time
The Castle of Hector, perched on a hill overlooking the Calore valley, is one of the most fascinating historical buildings in the SannioLocated in Apice Vecchia, it is part of a village abandoned after the 1962 earthquake, so much so that it is nicknamed the “Pompeii of the 900th century”.
The manor is now an open-air museum, restored and enhanced thanks to cultural initiatives such as the Christmas markets.
Throughout the year, the castle offers spectacular views, but it's with the arrival of Christmas that the site reaches its peak: luminous displays, soft lighting, and its tower transformed into Santa Claus's home create a truly magical atmosphere.
In this place suspended between past and present, visitors can also take guided tours of the historic village of Apice Vecchia, to discover the history, architecture, and melancholic charm of its empty streets.
The Enchantment of the Ettore Castle Christmas Markets
The Ettore Castle Christmas Markets are the heart of the Christmas event. The 2025 edition, the seventh, is particularly packed with new features: the castle will be transformed into a true fairytale kingdom, inspired by Disney stories, with spectacular sets and shows for adults and children alike.
On selected weekends between November and December, the castle walls come alive with wooden huts, artisan stalls offering original local creations, and food stalls offering typical local products.
The Food Area, curated by the Apice Pro Loco, is particularly popular: hot dishes, traditional delicacies, and local wines add flavor to the Christmas experience.
There's no shortage of entertainment: jesters, fire jugglers, dancers, and extras put on thrilling performances, while Santa Claus's House, located at the top of the castle tower, welcomes children to deliver their letters.
Plus, an attraction dedicated to fantasy fans: Hogwarts Magic School, with settings inspired by Harry Potter, allows you to immerse yourself in the magic of the famous saga.
Finally, the historical reenactment "Siege of the Castle," organized by the Benevento Longobarda Association, transports visitors back in time to the 6th century, with medieval camps, archery, crafts, and historical battles.

I visited Hector's Castle a few years ago and I have to say it's a very beautiful and fascinating place. The markets are also nice, but there were too many people. The lights were bright, but I didn't really like it.
