Severe weather continues to ravage Campania, forcing Naples and the Amalfi Coast to wait vigilantly for Christmas Day. Meanwhile, the risk of landslides and flooding becomes a concrete reality for residents, amplifying the importance of the safety measures already implemented by the Civil Protection Department.
Naples – The severe weather continues to continue in Campania, which is preparing to experience a Christmas Day below the warning threshold. The Campania Region's Civil Protection Department has issued an extension of the yellow weather alert, extending its vigilance until 18:00 PM tomorrow, Thursday, December 25th.
The Operational Center's decision stems from a careful assessment of the meteorological and, above all, hydrogeological conditions. Although the heaviest rainfall may provide a break, the impact of the recent rains remains highly focused. Engineers warn of a concrete "residual risk": the soil, now saturated with water, may not be able to support the water, triggering surface runoff, rockfall, and landslides even in the absence of further torrential rains.
The areas concerned
The extension of the alert, which starts at 6:00 AM tomorrow morning (when the previous warning expired) until 18:00 PM, does not apply to the entire region but focuses on the most hydrogeologically fragile areas, zones 1 and 3:
Zone 1: Campanian Plain, Naples, Islands, Vesuvian Area;
Zone 3: Sorrento-Amalfi Peninsula, Sarno Mountains and Picentini Mountains.
The current alert, which covers a wider area, will remain in effect until 6:00 a.m. on Christmas Day, including the Alto Volturno, Matese, and much of Cilento. The alert will lift at sunrise, leaving the critical situation concentrated only in the capital and the coastal strip.
The Civil Protection Department recommends that the competent authorities maintain all measures to prevent and counteract the expected phenomena, with particular attention to slope stability and hydrogeological risk.
Weather conditions are worsening in Campania, and an orange alert has been issued for a significant portion of the region. The Campania Region Civil Protection Department has issued a criticality warning, valid from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 14, until 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 15. The alert applies to the entire region, except for Zone 4 (Alta…
Ischia – A veritable siege of water and wind. For over two days, the island of Ischia has been hostage to a devastating wave of severe weather, with a storm surge that is severely testing coastal infrastructure and the patience of residents and commuters. Strong winds from the western quadrants (third and fourth) have raised…
SALERNO – Landslides, mudslides, and flooding have been affecting the Salerno area in recent hours, where severe weather has left a trail of damage and disruption to traffic. The most critical situation is along the coast and in the hilly areas, with work underway and traffic slowed in several strategic locations.
In Camerota, Cilento, the force of the sea has hurled rocks, sand, and debris onto the Mingardo regional road 562. Safety operations are still underway, and municipal police are patrolling the area. The road remains passable, but the municipality urges extreme caution. In the same area, a landslide caused by heavy rains affected the road between Camerota and Lentiscosa: prompt intervention allowed traffic to be restored within a few hours.

I think safety measures are very important in situations like this, but I don't know if a yellow alert alone is enough. Perhaps more attention and resources are needed to help people in need. Let's hope everything goes well.
