Marzano Appio – Tragedy struck on the morning of Tuesday, December 23, in the municipality of Marzano Appio, in the province of Caserta, where an 83-year-old man lost his life following smoke emissions from a fire in his home's chimney.
According to initial reconstructions, the chimney suddenly caught fire, causing an explosion and releasing a large amount of smoke that filled the apartment within minutes. The elderly man, who was inside, was unable to escape.
The alarm was raised by neighbors, who became suspicious of the smoke coming from the house. Firefighters from the Caserta provincial command and paramedics from 118 responded to the scene, but all attempts to provide assistance were in vain: the man was already dead, likely from asphyxiation.
The safety measures at the building continued for several hours. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire and identify any structural or maintenance issues with the smoke extraction system.
