Sant'Antonio Abate – The Christmas tree lies on the ground, overturned at the entrance to a small bedroom, a silent witness to a holiday that has turned into a nightmare. Alongside the colorful baubles and lights, there's blood. So much, too much blood.
Not even the sacredness of the Christmas holidays could stop a man's violent hand, confirming a sad truth that the news regularly brings to our attention: gender violence knows no calendar, takes no holidays, and often escalates precisely within the home on days that should be dedicated to family peace.
It was a horrifying scene that the Carabinieri of the local station and the Mobile Radio Section of Castellammare di Stabia found themselves faced with, when they responded yesterday to a call for help in Sant'Antonio Abate.
Inside the apartment, the soldiers stopped a 66-year-old man in a state of blind rage as he attempted to attack his wife, a 61-year-old woman who was already seriously injured.
The Dynamics of Horror
The reconstruction of events reads like a domestic war report. At the height of an argument, the man transformed everyday objects into improper weapons. He grabbed an iron and struck the woman repeatedly, before attacking her head with a kitchen ladle.
Not satisfied, he pushed her violently until her face hit the corner of the refrigerator.
The house bears the scars of battle: plastic plates and pots scattered across the floor, the kitchen door hinges torn off by the force of the impact. In this apocalyptic scenario, the couple's two children, aged 31 and 24, desperately tried, with great difficulty, to shield their mother, later telling the soldiers of a past marked by countless episodes of unrelenting violence.
The rush to the hospital and the handcuffs
The 61-year-old was treated by 118 paramedics and rushed to the emergency room of the San Leonardo Hospital in Castellammare di Stabia. The medical report is shocking: "multiple rib fractures, both compound and comminuted."
The woman was admitted to the surgical ward and kept under close observation; the prognosis is not guarded, but the wounds, both physical and psychological, will take a long time to heal.
The 66-year-old was immediately arrested on charges of domestic abuse. By order of the Torre Annunziata Prosecutor's Office, he was transferred to prison, putting an end, at least for now, to the nightmare of a family torn apart during the holidays.
The "monster" doesn't go on vacation
This story forces us to face an uncomfortable reality: violence against women doesn't stop at the calendar. There's a Christmas rhetoric that speaks of peace, serenity, and domestic warmth, but for too many women, the holidays represent the most dangerous time of the year.
Holidays, school and office closures, force us into a forced and prolonged coexistence with our tormentors. The home that should be a refuge turns into a prison, where the Christmas tree is not a symbol of joy, but a silent witness to abuse.
The episode of Sant'Antonio Abate reminds us that the "Red Code" does not take a vacation and that violence, unfortunately, does not respect the sacredness of any day; on the contrary, it often feeds on the intimacy of the home to explode with greater ferocity.
